Regional attractions

A major attraction of the region has to be the magnificent scenery. Between June and October the mountain pass roads are normally open, so visitors with their own transport can easily tour the region.

A number of famous passes are easily reached, the Col de la Croix de Fer, Col du Glandon and Col de Mollard are all close by. The Col de Galibier, Col de la Telegraphe, Col de Lauteret, Col de l’Iseran, Col de la Madeleine, Col du Mont Cenis and the Grand Cucheron are all less than two hours away. Of course most of these passes are closed from November to June.

The crossroads of the Alps, Chambery, the thermal spa Aix les Bains and the beautiful old town of Annecy are easily reached and even Turin and Chamonix are barely two hours drive away. Rich in architecture, the region has an excellent Baroque route which includes the St Saturnin church in St Sorlin. The picturesque medieval fortified Cite de Conflans, dominating the modern winter Olympics town, Albertville, is well worth a visit.

Even closer is Savoie’s Route des Vins, where a leisurely drive can take you through scores of vineyards between Challes-les-Eaux and Gresy sur Isere. Besides the many wine tasting opportunities, there is also the possibility of visiting the ramparts and dungeons of the magnificent Chateau de Miolans. This fortress dominates the confluence of the Isere and Arc rivers and was at one time prison to the infamous Marquis de Sade.
